EXCERPT:

Steve, Joe, Dave and I were waiting in the living room. I called up to Sam several times. He didn’t answer.

“He’s probably having trouble deciding which Clay Love jersey to wear,” Dave joked.

I ran up the stairs and knocked on his door. “Sam?”

No answer.

I turned the doorknob and pushed the door open slowly.

“Sam, are you ready?”

Still no answer.

I walked through his room toward his bathroom. When I came around the other side of his bed, I saw him. He was laying on the floor unconscious.

I screamed, “Call 911! It’s Sam!”

In less than two seconds, Steve was in the room. He must have taken the stairs three at a time. He pushed me out of the way and knelt next to Sam, checking his pulse, listening for breathing.

“He’s alive! Let’s not wait for an ambulance. We can get him there faster.”

“No,” said. “The hospital is close. The ambulance is probably already here.”

I was right. Within a couple of minutes, the paramedics were lifting Sam onto a gurney. Dave and Morrison held the photographers back so the paramedics could get Sam to the ambulance.

Steve took my arm. “Come on, I’ll take you to the hospital.” Then he looked at Joe. “Do you have that paperwork?” Joe nodded. I had no idea what paperwork they were talking about, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to get in the car and get to the hospital as fast as possible. Joe and Steve got me into the car. Dave was going to watch the house and Morrison would be following to the hospital in another car to help with security there, if needed.

All I could think about was Sam.

In the car, I asked Steve, “How long was it since anybody saw him? How long could he have been lying there?”

“I don’t know,” Steve said.

“I saw him several hours ago, right after lunch. He said he was tired. He was going upstairs to rest.”

“So he could have been there for hours? Oh my god.” I put my head in my hands.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

Book Blast & Giveaway - A Perfect Catch by Anna Sugden

A Perfect Catch

by Anna Sugden

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
He's the perfect catch…for now!
When it comes to romance, Tracy Hayden is not looking for a rematch. She's had epic passion—and problems!—with professional hockey player Ike Jelinek. Brilliant on skates and magic in bed, his too-traditional-for-her views were like a bucket of ice water on their affair.
Then an injury takes Ike out of the game, and everything changes. Suddenly he needs her services-providing business—even though he once claimed it was their biggest problem. Tracy's determined to be professional, despite the sizzling attraction between them that won't go away. Maybe they need a second fling to fix that!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

As the older folks exclaimed excitedly over Joe, Tracy was touched by the joy and love in the room. So different from when Emily was born, when Tracy had been the only family member to visit. Their father had hated London and refused to travel south. Even though it had broken their mother’s heart not to see her first grandchild, as usual she hadn’t fought her husband’s decision. Horrified, Tracy had sworn then that she’d never let a man control her life. Sadly, only a short while later, she’d fallen into the same trap.

Tracy’s phone vibrated against her hip, breaking into her dark thoughts. Grateful for the interruption, she stepped away from the bed to check the caller ID.

Bloody hell. She’d missed a call from Glen at the Brooklyn Bridgers, one of the local Major League Soccer teams. She and Glen had played phone tag all day. The Bridgers were interested in the Helping Hand services her business had recently begun to offer. They had a new French star, Marcel Chabal, whom she’d been helping to relocate from France. Marcel’s wife didn’t speak much English and needed support for the transition to living in a new country.

As she listened to Glen’s voice mail, she saw Ike frown at her. His obvious disapproval made her bristle. How dare he judge her? Her business was successful because she was available to meet her clients’ needs 24/7. Unscheduled calls like this one were rare, but right now, time wasn’t on her side. She needed project and budget approval so she could have everything in place for when the couple arrived this weekend.

“I’ll be available until eleven tonight.” Glen signed off. “Call me.”

If she phoned right now, she might catch him. Since no one other than Ike—and he didn’t count—was paying her any attention, Tracy slipped out of the room.

Luckily, the waiting room was empty, so Tracy could call Glen in privacy. This time, they connected and he approved both the proposal and the budget. “Send over the revised paperwork and I’ll sign it.”

Tracy kept her voice calm and professional, though she wanted to fist-pump the air. “Great. I’ll get that to you first thing tomorrow.”

Once she’d hung up, Tracy decided to celebrate with a coffee. As she waited for the machine to do its thing, she gave a happy wiggle. Major score! And a very nice boost to her turnover. Hopefully, once the Bridgers saw how Helping Hands enabled Mme. Chabal to settle more easily and eased Marcel’s stress, they’d extend the contract to cover all their foreign players. Their positive reference would be invaluable for pitching the service to her other clients.

Collecting her coffee, Tracy glanced at the clock. Visiting hours would be over shortly and she wanted another cuddle with her new nephew. It had been a good evening all around.

“Excuse me.”

Ike’s deep voice, close to her ear, startled her.

I am a sarcastic,sometimes foul-mouthed, not afraid to drink a beer, always southern woman with 2 of the most amazing teenage daughters, a menagerie of animals and a voracious appetite for reading who recently decided to write the stories running through her brain.

I read my first book, Dr Suess' Cat in The Hat by myself at 4 and was hooked. I believe a good book along with shoes, makeup and purses will never let a girl down and that all heroes of all the books I have ever read or will ever write pale in comparison to my daddy!

I am a sucker for a happy ending and love some hot sweaty sex with a healthy dose of romance.I am still working on my story but believe it will contain all of the above with as much SPICE as I can work into it.

Sometimes, the thing you want belongs to someone else...

Jack - Once upon a time I had everything. The perfect family. The perfect life. In one horrible year, it went away. I can never have it back but I can hurt the man responsible for taking what was left. I know how to steal something even more important from him. He doesn't see how she looks at me instead of him. I can make her burn for me, make her addicted to me before I send her back.

And it will be so easy.

Tora - I’ll cross any line to get to the truth, no matter who I have to hurt. I don’t have a choice. I’m not afraid to use sex to get what I want. I know you think that makes me a whore. But until you understand what’s at stake, you can’t know.

Don’t judge me until you do.

Sometimes, you have to take what you want no matter what it costs.

excerpt

Jack leaned in the doorway of the study giving me a cool smirk and my blood simmered. I’d been so careless. My mind spun, trying to weave the lie that might satisfy Jack as to why I was in this room alone. I didn’t belong here and he knew it. Seth accepted my lies so easily. Jack, I suspected, was a different species altogether.

“You seem to have a habit of sneaking up on me,” I said. He was casual, I would be too.

“You seem to have a habit of sneaking off,” he said. He moved away from the door and came toward me.

“She didn’t like me very much, your stepmother,” I said. I would stick to as much of the truth as I dared. He doesn’t know anything, I reminded myself. Until five minutes ago, I’d been careful.

“Me either,” Jack said. He was no more than a foot away from me. He had his hands in the pockets of his dress pants, making his suit jacket lay open. His crisp, white shirt stretched across his broad, strong chest. “Were you not good enough for her little boy, Seth?”

I sat back on the desk, crossing my arms in front of me I let my bare feet dangle. I had tossed my shoes in a heap by the door. Out there, I owned the dress Seth made me wear. It served my purpose to act as his trophy. In here though, it was just Jack. And he had a way of looking through me that made me feel naked.

“I didn’t know her very long,” I said. “She barely knew me before she died. I didn’t take her opinions personally.”

When Jack smiled, his eyes flashed. “You think you would have survived if she had?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean...how long have you been engaged to Seth? Two months, three? My guess is she was just starting to do her number on you.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But, like I said. I didn’t it take personally. I find a lot of people make assumptions about me at their peril.”

Jack nodded. “I think I can see that.”

“So what were you hoping to find by sneaking off back here?” I said. The second I said it, I knew I’d found my hook. Jack’s eyes darkened.

“Just looking around,” he said. “You know this wasn’t originally Miranda’s house. My father bought it for my real mother just a few months before she passed away. We never lived here though. It needed renovations. Miranda ended up doing them. What do you think of the place?”

“It’s big,” I said. A pulse beat toward Jack’s throat and I wondered if that was his tell. It beast faster as soon as he started talking about his real mother. “I think I would have gone with a more modern, less ostentatious flare.”

Jack nodded. “Maybe you’ll still get the chance. That’s what you’re after isn’t it with Seth? The money. The house. That’s the rumor everyone’s spinning.” His words were cruel but his eyes held mischief.

It was bait I was smart enough not to take. So, I cast my own. “What are you after? Seth got everything didn’t he? The money. The house. But you...you’ve always done fine on your own haven’t you? What could Seth possibly have that you still want?”

I smiled and tucked my hair behind my ear. Something in Jack’s expression shifted when I did it. He froze, the smirk melted off his face and a shadow came over him. He moved in close and cupped his hand around the back of my head, tilting it sideways. His breath was hot against my cheek. Until now, it was Miranda’s scent, Miranda’s presence that filled my senses in this house. In an instant, Jack Manning wiped all of that away.

I misread the gesture as he came close to me. Or maybe I didn’t. But, when Jack’s skin touched mine, it ignited something that I’d known was there from the second I saw him. My flesh burned hot where he touched me. I took in his clean, musky scent. My eyes locked with his. His brown eyes widened and flashed, seeing something in mine that he maybe hadn’t expected.

I could say I don’t know why I did it. I could say it just happened. But that would be yet another lie. I wanted him. I wanted something that was real even if it was just for one moment.

Jack brushed my earlobe with his thumb and I brought my hands up, sliding them across his shoulders and up along the back of his neck. I drew him down to me and brought my lips to his.

I kissed him.

There was the slightest tension in his arms but then he responded. Jack pulled me against him so every part of me touched him. I might have been naked since I had only the thin silk of my dress protecting my skin from his touch. His chest was firm and warm, his skin hot under my fingers as I drew him down even closer. As I pulled him forward, his weight pressed me further on the desk. He kissed me back slow and deep, his tongue probing, his lips a feathery touch against mine. He was holding back. When he finally broke away, the pulse at his throat beat furiously. My chest heaved as I tried to catch my breath.

Jack didn’t say anything but kept his eyes locked with mine until he took two steps backward and turned toward the door. He took the knob in his hand and for an instant, I thought he was leaving. Instead, he quietly closed the door and engaged the lock. Then, he turned back toward me, his eyes smoldering. Heat flared between my legs as he came back to me with four strong strides.

Meet the Author

Like most authors, I've been writing stories all my life in my head. What I try to bring to the page is what I love about the stories I read. Strong heroines, snappy dialogue, interesting predicaments. Throw that all in with some scorching sex scenes and I'm hooked. My real life is far less daring. My husband and I are in the process of rearing a small herd of children. I'm a lawyer, media consultant, band mom theatre mom, football mom, wrestling mom. As a result, my favorite recipes come with Costco labels. We live in the beautiful Irish Hills area of Michigan on a lake where our interesting neighbors always keep us entertained, my husband makes his own wine, and the fish are always biting.
